Teach Kindness Produces Noticeable Impact in Guilford County, North Carolina

Guilford County Public Schools, a National District of Character, embraced Teach Kindness in the Fall 2017 cycle. Discipline data show that the ten middle schools that successfully completed the challenge saw significant drops in discipline referrals, as well as in- and out-of-school suspensions.

In other words, teaching and fostering kindness isn’t just a good thing in its own right – it can have a real impact on discipline issues.

Referrals leading to in-school suspensions dropped by 33 percent when compared to data from the previous semester while out-of-school suspensions decreased by 11 percent in the same time period. When compared to district middle schools that did not participate, the trends are even more pronounced.

Guilford County was so encouraged by the immediate impact Teach Kindness had on its schools, district leadership brought the challenge to all its eligible schools in recent cycles.
